The Living Library Within: How Your Brain Creates New Memories

New research from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has revealed a hidden architectural feature that makes this possible: a vast reserve of what scientists call “silent synapses.” They were believed to largely disappear early in life. But MIT neuroscientists have now discovered that about 30 percent of synapses in the adult brain’s cortex fall into this silent category, far more than previously expected. These synapses are real physical connections between neurons, but they lie dormant, waiting, like unwritten pages in a book, ready to receive new information.

We have long assumed that memory lives in the brain. But a remarkable study from New York University (NYU) has overturned this assumption entirely. The researchers tested two types of non-brain cells – one from nerve tissue, one from kidney tissue – by exposing them to varying patterns of chemical signals. Remarkably, both cell types activated the same “memory gene” that brain cells use when forming new memories.

We have always spoken of five senses. But researchers from the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) have developed a mathematical model of memory that leads to a surprising conclusion. Their analysis found that when each concept retained in memory is characterized in terms of seven features – as opposed to five or eight – the number of distinct objects held in memory is maximized.

What does science tell us, taken together? That we are not fixed. That we are not limited. That the capacity for growth, learning, transformation, and expansion of consciousness is not reserved for the young, the gifted, or the few. It is built into the cells of every living being.
