The “Rainbow Body” is a remarkable and mysterious concept within the highest teachings of Tibetan Buddhism known as Dzogchen, or the “Great Perfection.” It refers to an extraordinary spiritual attainment at the time of death, when an advanced practitioner who has fully realized the true nature of mind undergoes a profound transformation. Traditional accounts describe different degrees of this attainment. At the highest level, which is considered extremely rare, the practitioner’s body is said to gradually emit Light while the physical form diminishes, in some cases disappearing entirely. In some reports, within a few days after death, the physical body is described as transforming into Light and Sound, leaving behind only hair and nails, along with small, crystalline relics known as śarīra.Although often associated with early Tibetan history, the Rainbow body is not solely an ancient legend; similar accounts have also been reported in more recent times. Remembered in Tibetan Buddhist communities as a highly accomplished Master of the Nyingma tradition, His Eminence Khenpo Achö Rinpoche was born in 1918 in Nyarong, eastern Tibet. Khenpo Achö Rinpoche developed a deep knowledge of Buddhist scriptures and philosophy, memorizing 480,000 words from various sutras and treatises. He became well-versed in both the exoteric and esoteric aspects of the tradition and was known for His sharp intellect, disciplined conduct, and strict adherence to the monastic precepts. During a time of widespread political upheaval and persecution in Tibet, His Eminence Khenpo Achö Rinpoche endured severe hardship. Despite the suffering, He did not express bitterness toward others and remained steadfast in His commitment to His teachers, to the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha), and to His Buddhist practice.Khenpo Achö Rinpoche had a wide range of disciples, from nuns in Kandze to local villagers and even members of His own family. He was able to calm wild animal-people, thieves, and bandits, and to ease the anger of those who opposed Him, responding to difficult circumstances with composure. Around 1992, the Master is said to have entered deep states of meditation for extended periods. In late August 1998, a number of mysterious phenomena were reported around His meditation retreat.
