Nature’s bounty is offered to us all by the trees, plants, fruits, leaves and seeds. For that gift of life, we are truly grateful. Today I’d like to offer a simple tip for better health. Magnesium is an essential mineral that supports many important functions in the body, including muscle and nerve function, energy production, healthy bones and blood sugar regulation. Many adults do not get enough, with recommended daily amounts ranging from about 310–420 mg depending on age and sex. Low magnesium can contribute to fatigue, muscle cramps and, in more severe deficiency, abnormal heart rhythms. Some health conditions and medications can reduce magnesium absorption or increase magnesium losses, and supplements may sometimes be needed to correct a deficiency under medical guidance. A practical approach is to include magnesium-rich foods, such as leafy greens, nuts, seeds, beans, whole grains, avocados and bananas in your daily diet. These whole foods also provide many other nutrients that work together to support good health, rather than relying on a supplement containing a single nutrient.
